Adults eat 22 teaspoons of sugar a day. Our “hunter gatherer” ancestors ate 22 teaspoons a year. More troubling is that American kids eat 33 teaspoons a day, spiking their insulin levels and equally bad, causing them mood swings, attention issues and depression.
We all enjoy a good chocolate mousse cake at a dinner with friends or a warm croissant, but your SO’s birthday cake is not the only place you’re getting your sugar — think French Fries, everything bagels, pesto pasta, pizza and many other foods that don’t even taste sweet. Plus all the packaged foods with added sugars like salad dressing, marinara sauce, and peanut butter etc.
So what do you do?
1. Read labels: sugar is in sneaky places. Yes you, Skippy!
2. Cut out all sweetened drinks. Period. 86 the DD Caramel Lattes. Sugar bombs with a straw.
3. Avoid refined and processed carbohydrates. Goodbye Goldfish!
4. Skip “healthy foods” like fruit yogurts, bottled smoothies, granola bars, Raisin Bran, and oatmeal packets. Don’t be fooled.
If you follow these guidelines, you can enjoy the champagne and wedding cake at a special event and not send your blood sugar spiraling. Cheers!
