What is PCOS?

I was diagnosed with PCOS two years ago and have since realised that it is a condition many other women deal with as well. In this article, I’d like to explain more about PCOS, the diagnosis and treatments available, as well as some of the methods that have helped me manage my symptoms and feel like myself again.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition that can affect girls and women, often beginning during the teenage years. It can affect menstrual cycles, hormone levels, ovulation, skin, hair growth and metabolism.

PCOS can look different from person to person. Some people may experience irregular or absent periods, acne, notice irregular facial or body hair, hair thinning or difficulties with fertility. Others may have fewer noticeable symptoms.

The condition can be diagnosed at different stages of life, including during teenage years and adulthood. Because symptoms can vary, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional for an assessment and diagnosis.
