Treatment for PCOS?

Treatment for PCOS?

There is no single treatment for PCOS, as symptoms and needs vary from person to person. Treatment is usually focused on managing individual symptoms and supporting overall health.

A doctor may recommend different medications depending on the symptoms and goals. For example, hormonal contraception may be used to help regulate periods and manage symptoms such as acne. Other medications may be recommended to help with insulin resistance, unwanted hair growth or fertility, depending on the person’s needs.

Lifestyle can also play an important role in managing PCOS. Many people do not realise how much nutrition, movement and exercise can support hormonal and metabolic health. For some women, cardio based exercise can be helpful, particularly when insulin resistance is a concern. For others, lower intensity exercise combined with strength or weight training may feel more effective and sustainable. There is no single exercise routine that works for everyone with PCOS.

Nutrition is also important. Limiting highly processed foods and foods high in added sugars, while focusing on balanced meals with protein, fiber, whole grains, vegetables, fruit and healthy fats, can support overall health and blood sugar management. It is also important to understand that weight changes associated with PCOS can be more difficult for some women to manage. Hormonal and metabolic changes can affect appetite, insulin sensitivity and weight, meaning that simply eating less or exercising more does not always produce the results someone expects. This is why a personalised approach, alongside appropriate medical advice can be helpful.
